By Kristin, an RMHC Mother
When I hear “back-to-school season”, I think of tasks such as filling out back-to-school forms, signing my children up for sports and activities, and purchasing school supplies. I also think of explaining my child’s medical needs to his teacher, creating and monitoring a medical plan, and doing a lot of extra laundry because of his needs.
I’m a teacher, so thankfully I have the summer off. Right now, though, I’m working at night at the Ronald McDonald House while my children sleep.
We’re grateful for the provision of RMHC, because otherwise much of our family’s summer travel money would go toward hotels and meals while we work on our son’s medical treatments.
At RMHC, we have access to Wi-Fi, and so my boys were able to keep up with their summer language lessons and spelling work while we were away from home, since there is a small desk in our room at the House.
My boys love coming to RMHC, even as they get older. They enjoy the House, the many activities there, and meeting other kids. My son is especially happy that many kids staying there have special needs. This year, he met a boy from a similar background and family to ours who had the exact same medical need!
“Mom, he’s the same as me!!” he exclaimed. He was so, so excited just to be understood that way and to feel like, for once, he’s not “the only one” with his need. That was invaluable to me as a parent.
At Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Ohio, stories like Kristin’s remind us that back-to-school season isn’t just about pencils and backpacks; it’s about stability, routine, and the chance for kids to learn and thrive, even while facing serious medical challenges. This summer, your support makes that possible.
