Making an impact is better with your best friend

By: Debby Peck and Nancy Ringhiser

We have been volunteering at Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Ohio since 2014.

I (Nancy) began volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House when I retired and one week I invited Debby to come volunteer with me. She loved her first shift here and began coming with me once a month until she retired this past August. Now, we both volunteer as “Go-getters” every Monday morning! We are retired school bus drivers from The Groveport Madison School District. We do most things together. We travel, shop, watch the Buckeye games and of course volunteer!

Now that our children and grandchildren are at the ages where they don’t need us as often as they used to we have lots of extra time on our hands. We enjoy being around people and helping with anything we can. After our first week of volunteering we fell in love with the mission of the Ronald McDonald House. There are definitely Monday mornings when we feel tired and it’s difficult to find the energy to get up and get moving but once we walk in the doors of the House our energy instantly picks up! We’re on the go pretty much non-stop for our 4 hour shift! It’s so nice to chat with our families while we’re out and about in the House or the dining room. Some families are eager to share their stories or are happy to fill you in on how their day is going when we ask. It only takes a moment to realize the tough times our families are facing. Some are experiencing the most difficult times of their lives. Volunteering at the House has confirmed that we are truly blessed. We hope that our time here brightens someone’s day or lightens their load even if just for the 4 hours we are here.  If you find that you have a little extra time on your hands please come volunteer with us on a Monday morning! We would love to share the House with you!!
